Tom and Dawn O'Day on the Ice Fields of Alaska

We're not sure which is more breath-taking, the O'Days or the Alaskan Ice Fields.

Interesting note about Dawn. "She married me for my last name," O'Day says. "In Irish she is Dawn of the Day Clan. She really is a 'morning' person."

O'Day could go on and on with this, but we won't let him, at least for now.

Finally, An Opportunity To Reconnect with Gary Greene

Classmate Gary Greene and his lovely grandchildren, Chasidy Marie, Keirsten Nicole, and SeAnne Elizabeth) ages 8, 7 and 5.

It's been almost 50 years since most of us have connected with classmate Gary Greene. He has not attended any of our class reunions but says he is looking forward to our 50th-year bash in 2009. Gary has led an eventful and fruitful life since we last saw him.

After graduation, he attended Bucknell University and planned to become a biochemist. But a tragic explosion which claimed the life of his father Norman Greene in July 1960 forced him to to leave school for a spell. He enrolled at Indiana State Teacher's College (now University) in 1961 and became a successful junior and senior high school science teacher at Elkton, MD, High School from 1965 through 1995.

He then taught science at Mount Aviat Academy in Maryland for 11 years before "retiring" in 2006. Not one to stay inactive, Gary has been substitute teaching in Cecil County since then, "29 schools, any grade, any subject." During the 2006-07 school year, he taught 187 days in a 180-day school year. How so? Some days he worked two jobs.

Now for a real Clearfield angle. At CHS, Gary was an aspiring wrestler. Although he never stepped on the varsity mat, "I apparently learned something," Gary says. He organized the wrestling program at Elkton High School in 1970 and compiled an impressive record for 23 seasons. Among the highlights of his coaching career, Gary led his team to an undefeated season in 1972-73 and organized the Cecil County Junior Team and the first Cecil County Junior Tournament in 1983 (which, of course, his team won).

After his retirement, the Elkton wrestling program went downhill, so the school invited Gary and his son Mike to return to the mats last year as co-coaches. Talk about being in demand!

Congratulations, Gary, and welcome back. We look forward to seeing you and your family at our 50th-year reunion.

Suzy Nagle Uncovers "Hyde City Tech" Photo

(Editor's Note - We have been holding this great photo for some time awaiting Suzy Nagle's tome about life in "Hyde City." Since all of these photos are precious and deserve to be shared and viewed by all, we decided to run it now. Suzy's story is forthcoming, we believe.)

Suzy's Photo Description:

I found this 4th and 5th grades class picture while going through all the junk that we decided NOT to throw out when we moved. I'm still mulling over the accompanying text; but I need Orvie Kline to help identify folks. Hopefully, Orvie, you have the same picture somewhere.

It should be noted that HCT (that's Hyde City Tech) had only four classrooms for six grades when I started first grade. Later, with the influx of Litz Bridge, Mt Zion and West Second and Third Avenue residents, plus the new Highview Village development, a fifth classroom was added.

The teacher pictured is Mrs. Bartley (our classmate, Anne Bartley Aughenbaugh's mother). Most of the kids pictured were fifth graders (class of '58). The other half of the fourth grade was in another classroom.

Here are the names that I remember: Top Row - Mrs Bartley, Joe White (5th), Suzy Sherkel, Jim Lanager (Giles' brother-5th), Judy Haag/Shubert, Wes Shimmel, Lois Schickling (5th), Dick Duckett (5th) and Helen Newpher.

Second Row (from top) - Raymond Ogden (5th), Sarah Reitmyer, Dick Rose (Bob's brother-5th), Bill Newpher (Helen's brother-5th), Joyce Billotte, and ________?

Third Row (from top) - Delores Goss (5th), Jim Hile, Becky Holt (5th), Bob Rose, Margaret Bell (5th), Ronny Taylor (? 5th), Gloria Heitsenrether, Orvie Kline, and _________?.

Fourth Row (from top) - Nancy Johnson (5th), Mary Jane Yatta, ________?, Doris Magnuson (5th), Clayton Teats (5th), ________?, Chuck Nelson, ________?, and whomever I cut out (for whatever reason).

Bottom Row - Celine Collins (Sandy Collins Foust's sister-5th), ________?, Virginia Mabie, ________?, Suzanne McBride (5th), and Sonia Nelson (Chuck's sister-5th)

Photos Awarken (Partial) Memories in Karl Nagle

Denny:

You know I remember the trip south. The planning session for the trip south (several 16 oz Straub's each), while we waited for Sue to come home from school. This all happened at the High Street residence. You had to meet your dad at the S.O.I. for spaghetti dinner.

We came down for a Wet T-Shirt contest. The bar was closed when we arrived. This was just after the state became wet.

I honestly don't remember the dinner though, or Sue playing the piano.

See you in August.

- Karl

EDITOR'S NOTE - Karl's memory is pretty good. Yes, we talked a lot about the wet T-shirt contest. At the Paperdoll Lounge. In fact, the dinner was immediately before heading out to the contest. But when we got there, the Paperdoll was closed. For the Metrolina Fair. Geez, talk about timing. One more thing: The beer was Stroh's.

As for the rest, the photos tell it all.

Yes, see you in August!

Remarkable Photos From the Dinosaur Age

In the summer of 1979, following our 20th year CAHS class reunion, Suzy and Karl Nagle came to Matthews, NC - now annexed by Charlotte - to visit the Molluras for fun, food and frivolity. Recently, a group of archeologists searching for artifacts from the Mesozoic Era unearthed these never-before-seen photos.

We don't remember the tune, but we're sure it was elegant. Maybe Rhapsody in Blue.

Jutta's Report Stirs Herb's Memories

Hey Denny: You are right , a great addition to our memories from Jutta ! I serviced some of Jutta's father's Mercedes cars at my father's gas station in Keewaydin when Mr. Hagar worked for Curtiss-Wright in Quehanna in the 50's and early 60's.

I recall a 190D (diesel) sedan that he drove regularly to work. I did the oil changes, greasing, and general maintenance on the vehicle for a very particular customer who was immensely proud of his vehicles. I believe he brought other vehicles for service but I can't recall for sure, unable to distinguish (in memory) his from the fleet of Mercedes operated by C-W, which we also serviced for a few years until they established their own service garage at the Quehanna facility.

C-W also owned Studebaker-Packard during that time period so they also had those brand vehicles in their fleet. Roy Hurley was CEO of C-W at that time and kept a 300SL Gullwing coupe in Quehanna for his use when at the facility. That was a real RUNNER !!.

They also had Studebaker Golden Hawks which were unquestionably the hottest production vehicle of that time with their supercharged 289 V/8 as standard equipment.

Jutta's info stirred these memories for this old writer. Another interesting fact, Jutta's son Carl's friend is from Bellefonte, just 20 miles away ! It truly is a small world .

Thanks. M.L.(Herb) Maney

Jutta Hager Helps Take Blog to a New Level

From the beginning, this website was to be a lot of things -- certainly more than a trip down high school memory lane. It was conceived as a place to share news about our 50th anniversary reunion next year, photos, ideas and information about ourselves and our families from childhood to the present. Here’s how we put it in the very first post in April 2007: "Greetings, fellow members of Clearfield Area High School Class of 1959! This is your website, created especially for our 50th year reunion in 2009. Come early, come often and share your thoughts, insights and memories of the marvelous and not-so-marvelous moments we shared and all that has happened since."

Since then, we have shared many wonderful moments, photos and contributions– particularly from Joyce Moody, Herb Maney, Peggy Jo Knepp, Sue Sherkel and Karl Nagle, Sonia Borst, Peggy Borst, Orvie Kline, Tom O’Day, James Boron, Virginia Mabie, Barb Martell and others.

Lea Davidson, Ann Bartley and Phil Graham also have sent a number of great photos which will be posted in the near future.

We also have had some laughs. Who can forget Wilbur Shirey and the mythical girl scouts who invited him to his fantasy dances at non-existent venues in the Eighth Grade – and the back-and-forth chatter that ensued from his story?

Then there was Orvie Kline’s memory of a smiling Herb Maney posing for a Bison photo and stymieing Keith Knepp’s attempt to load a nuclear fission exhibit into a van.

Amidst all this, only few of us – primarily James Boron (See April 19 posting below), Wil Shirey and the blogmeister - have shared anything resembling a “life story.”

This has changed.

We are delighted to present (drum roll, please) the delightful, serious, studious, brainy, high-achieving Jutta Hager, who came through last week with some marvelous photos. With some gentle prodding, she produced even more.

Jutta says she looks forward to attending our 50th anniversary reunion next year, and we certainly look forward to visiting with her.

So, without further ado, we present the life and times of Jutta Hager, with photo captions in her own words. Here’s hoping Jutta’s response inspires other classmates to come forth with their own stories and photos.
