Message from the Mollura Family

To The CAHS Class of 1959,

The Mollura family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all of you who walked through the passing and Celebration of Life to honor Denny.  It is apparent to us that you all loved and appreciated him as much as he did you.

Thank you for the many things you did such as getting out word of his passing, keeping track of the responses for the luncheon, recommending a caterer and a place to have the meal.  We could not have gotten everything done without all of your help.

A lot of people learned something new about Denny because you took the time to provide many keepsakes from his school days.  Among those were pictures, newspaper clippings and the class banner you brought to the funeral home.

The floral arrangement was absolutely beautiful. We are using it as the center piece on our dining room table.

The book of Class of ’59 Blogs you presented us has so many wonderful articles in it.  Our family will spend many hours reading through it.

As friends and family, we will all remember Denny with much love and appreciation for the wonderful life we were privileged to know and share.

Many thanks to all of you,
The Mollura Family

Bet you didn't know .....

....that our beloved classmate Denny Mollura was a movie star!!!

Classmate Judi Rolley White became active in the "Save The Ritz" campaign and arranged to get a copy of the picture Denny was using on Facebook - and turned it into the poster shown above!  The Ritz theater folks joined in and put it in the showcase out front and posted it on the marquee!!  The pictures above were taken by Heather Condon of Heather Condon Photography in Grampian!

Judi planned on surprising Denny with the poster and pics at our picnic in August, but Denny was in the hospital at the time.  Judi was able to get the poster to Denny and we were told that he thoroughly enjoyed it and had a big smile on his face when he saw the poster!

Thank you Judi for what you accomplished in giving Denny a little joy!!

Editor's Note:  I will post details about the Ritz campaign in a later post.

Downtown Clearfield - Flood of 1936

Email from Tom O'Day:

My cousin, Norman Sunderland, sent me this picture that shows the Keystone Ice Cream Co. during the 1936 flood.

Tom

Editor's Note:  This picture was probably taken from up on the hill beside Hillcrest Cemetary.  It was taken during the flood of 1936 (March 17-22).  You can see the old Clearfield County Jail in the center of the picture and just barely make out the west side and the Market Street Bridge (upper left corner).  Just below the jail is the Keystone Ice Cream Co. and at the bottom center is what appears to be a barge or boat.  This is actually a railroad coal car loaded with coal.

Happy Birthday, C. Lee Lanager!!

Suzy summerizes CAHS Class of '59 picnic and dinner following on August 17, 2013

What a great day for our class picnic at the Clearfield K of C  grove! Many thanks to the Clearfield crew: Joyce & Mick, Judi & Denny and others, for decorating and covering the tables, as well as for providing the cute ice tubs, the "Save-the-Ritz" information and video, and to Denny White & Mick Hoover for "manning" the grill. As usual, there was a plethora of food and good, catching-up-type conversation.

There were 31 classmates and "guests" at the picnic: Joyce (Amon) & Dave Michaels; Maxine & Blaine Bloom; Gary Bolton; Bonnie (Henchbarger) & Ed Powell; Pat (Kinkead) Cutler; Orvis Kline; Peggy Jo (Knepp) Thompson; Lonnie & Helen Kovalick; Norman Kyler; Sandy & Sam Lansberry; Pauline Maloni; Sylvia & James McKenrick; Joyce (Moody) Fletcher & Mick Hoover; Tom O'Day; Judi (Rolley) & Denny White; Suzy (Sherkel) & Karl Nagle; Joanne (Shimel) & Bill Magnuson; Karen & Wil Shirey; Denny Mollura's brother, Dan; and Tom O'Day's sister, Helen. Plus, Carol (Morgan) Peterson, (Class of '58 - at the invitation of Judi White) dropped by to share a few minutes with us.

There were 13 (11 after Judi & Denny departed) at the evening dinner at Moena: Orvis Kline, Peggy Jo Thompson, our "hostess" Pauline Maloni, Sylvia & Jim McKenrick, Tom O'Day, Judi & Denny White (for a short while), Suzy & Karl Nagle, Joanne Magnuson, and Karen & Wil Shirey.

Of course, we were all sadly feeling the absence of our intrepid Denny Mo, star of the "Save-the-Ritz" video.

Test post for CAHS Blog

Hi Folks - thanks to some good detective work by Denny's daughter, Tracy, and fellow class members, Judi White, Suzy Nagle and Joyce Moody Fletcher, if all goes right - when I hit the publish button in a moment - this should appear as a new post on our blog!

I contacted Judi (knowing that cousin Judi would know EXACTLY what to do!) to find out if we had any info on getting access to the site.  I personally have enjoyed the posts made by Dennis and other classmates so much over the years, that I don't want to see it fade away.  I have agreed to be "blogmeister" - knowing that I have HUGE shoes to try and fill and certainly don't have the skills with words that Denny did - but I'll try!

I have more I'd like to say - but I think it wise to see if this actually works before I go on.  I would like to solicit comments, stories and especially any memories of our dear classmate, Dennis, so that I might compile a fitting memorial to the great man who started this blog and continued it in such a fine fashion for these past six and one half years!!

You may e-mail info to me at:  orvis@bellatlantic.net

"HELLO" from Carl Hollopeter!

Message from Sam Lansberry:

Carl Hollopeter stopped by my office about July 2nd or 3rd to say “ Hello.”

Looked good and is in good health. Lives in Auburn, Alabama. Comes home most years on 4th of July holiday for family reunion. Can’t make two trips so he can’t come to class reunion. I  asked.
Retired from Air Force.  Worked at Auburn Univ.  His 2nd wife teaches there.  1st wife passed mid-90s. He has his own machine shop and works part-time.

He remembered that the last time we saw each other, we shared a hospital room about 50 years ago. Time flies when you’re having fun!!!

He said he checks the  “Blog” and said to say “Hello” to everyone. So this is it:“  HELLO from Carl!

Happy Birthdays!

Remember Keystone Ice Cream, a locally owned firm on Bridge Street in Clearfield?

Delicious ice cream, icy root beer from a giant barrel, giant milkshakes,  unusual flavors such as Teaberry?  And if you didn't have a refrigerator, they would sell you a big block of ice for your basement or ice box.

Notice how beautifully this ad is written.  (Click on photo to read the copy.)

Keystone was owned by classmate Tom O'Day's family - believe it was his grandfather or uncle.

Those were the days.

CAHS planning group to meet Saturday, April 13

The CAHS planning group will meet on Saturday, April 13, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the  Clearfield Hospital cafeteria. The location has been moved from the first-floor conference room to the cafeteria because of a scheduling conflict.
Note to class members, including St. Francis:  Please plan to attend if at all possible.  We’d love to have your participation and your input.  It’s also a great opportunity to reconnect with your classmates.

By way of review, here are the notes from the most recent meeting last October:

An informal class picnic will be held Aug. 17, 2013 at the K of C picnic area.  A deposit has been paid and the reservation confirmed.

The group voted unanimously to hold a 55th-year reunion at the Clearfield Knights of Columbus.  Every effort will be made to minimize the workload for the reunion planners and to keep the cost as low as possible for attendees. A deposit has been paid to the K of C and the reservation confirmed.

Sam Lansberry once again graciously volunteered to hold a Friday night ice-breaker at his and Sandy's country home the evening before the reunion.  Thank you, Sam and Sandy!

The Shepherd's Program (in which we attempt to keep in touch with all class members) will continue as the group leaders feel is appropriate.  Thank you, Tom O'Day, for heading this effort.

Tom handed the leadership reins to Dennis Mollura for the coming year, Oct. 2012 to Oct. 2013.

Suzy Sherkel Nagle volunteered to serve as chair for the following year, Oct. 2013 to Oct. 2014.
