Jutta's Report Stirs Herb's Memories

Hey Denny: You are right , a great addition to our memories from Jutta ! I serviced some of Jutta's father's Mercedes cars at my father's gas station in Keewaydin when Mr. Hagar worked for Curtiss-Wright in Quehanna in the 50's and early 60's.

I recall a 190D (diesel) sedan that he drove regularly to work. I did the oil changes, greasing, and general maintenance on the vehicle for a very particular customer who was immensely proud of his vehicles. I believe he brought other vehicles for service but I can't recall for sure, unable to distinguish (in memory) his from the fleet of Mercedes operated by C-W, which we also serviced for a few years until they established their own service garage at the Quehanna facility.

C-W also owned Studebaker-Packard during that time period so they also had those brand vehicles in their fleet. Roy Hurley was CEO of C-W at that time and kept a 300SL Gullwing coupe in Quehanna for his use when at the facility. That was a real RUNNER !!.

They also had Studebaker Golden Hawks which were unquestionably the hottest production vehicle of that time with their supercharged 289 V/8 as standard equipment.

Jutta's info stirred these memories for this old writer. Another interesting fact, Jutta's son Carl's friend is from Bellefonte, just 20 miles away ! It truly is a small world .

Thanks. M.L.(Herb) Maney
