In one of his letters to another antiwar leader, Buckley said: … "the more I think about your suggestion for a coalition between the New Left and the libertarian right I get cramps in my brain…simply allowing the concept of civil liberties as defined by the Constitution –- which we see for what it is—to be perpetuated within our movement is detrimental, both because it allows people to take out frustrations through a system which in no way changes the basic tenents of capitalism and because it is internally inconsistent to base any of our analysis on the civil libertarian analysis which is several centuries out of date.
